The Golden Rule of Smart Shopping: What to Check Before You Buy

The best purchase is one you have thought about for a minute longer than you wanted to.

Before you pay, run through a short checklist. It takes seconds and prevents most regrets.

Do you already own something like it?

Open your wardrobe first. If you have something similar, the new piece needs to do something the old one does not.

Check the fabric composition

Read the label or the product page. Composition tells you a lot.

  • Wool, cotton, linen and silk are natural fibres that usually breathe well and age gracefully.
  • Blends can be excellent. A little elastane adds comfort. A little nylon can add strength.
  • Pure synthetics are not always bad. Some are durable and easy to care for. But very thin, shiny synthetics can look cheap and trap heat.

A higher share of a good natural fibre usually means better drape and feel, though construction matters too.

Look at the construction

If you can see the garment in person, check these:

  • Seams: straight, even and flat, with no puckering.
  • Stitching: small, tight stitches usually hold better than long loose ones.
  • Pattern matching: stripes and checks should line up at the seams.
  • Buttons and zips: sturdy, with spare buttons if possible.
  • Hems and linings: neat, with no loose threads.

Check the fit and proportions

If you are shopping online, compare the measurements with a garment you already own and love. Do not rely on the size label alone.

What to check in a product listing

  • Clear photos from several angles.
  • A full fabric composition and care instructions.
  • The garment measurements.
  • The return policy, including who pays for returns.

If key details are missing, think twice.

Will it work with three other things?

If you cannot name three outfits you could make with it, it is probably not the right buy.

Think in cost per wear

Divide the price by the number of times you expect to wear it. A more expensive coat worn a hundred times costs less per wear than a cheap top worn twice. This is a way of thinking, not a rule.

Sleep on it

If you are unsure, wait a day. If you still want it, it is far more likely to be a good buy.
