The weeks between seasons are the hardest to dress for. It is too warm for a heavy coat and too cool for nothing. A mid-weight uniform solves it.
The idea is simple: a small set of layers that you can add and remove through the day.
Mid-weight pieces are neither summer thin nor winter thick. Think fine merino knits, structured cotton, lightweight wool trousers and unlined or half-lined jackets.
They are comfortable across a wide temperature range, which makes them the most useful clothes you own.
Layering works best in thin sequences, not bulky ones.
Each layer should be slightly longer or looser than the one beneath it, so the edges show cleanly.
Layering can look bulky if everything is oversized. Balance it. If the top half is full, keep the trousers slimmer. If the trousers are wide, keep the top fitted.
Check the fabric label. Natural fibres generally regulate temperature better than very synthetic fabrics, though a small amount of stretch can help comfort and shape.
Choose three tops, two bottoms and two outer layers in compatible shades. That is enough for a surprising number of combinations. Wear them in a different order each day and nobody will notice the repeat.
